3D model description
With this tool, you can check the height of your dog (or any other animal) before competition or just let the pet get used to being measured. It uses plastic 3D printed parts and some 15mm aluminum square tubing. You can make the toll as big as you need considering the height of your pet.
I've gone through many iterations until I've finally made this final one which works reliably and it's the easiest to make.
The most used dimensions are 90cm for the scale and 35m for the measuring sticks.
The tool is very easy to use and no tools are required for taking it apart for transportation.
The 3D files have been designed with attention to the smallest detail and are fully optimized for 3D printing.
Parts needed to assemble one item:
1 - 2m of 15mm square aluminum tubing (according to your length requirements)
2 X m6 nuts
2 X m6x12 hexagonal head bolts
2 X m5x15 alien head button bolts
How to assemble the tool:
First, you need to print the plastic parts and cut your aluminum s tubing to length. Then you mark the holes in each of one of the measuring sticks using the plastic parts as a guide and drill 4mm holes. Then you use a tap to create an m5 thread. you can then glue endcaps into all three pieces of tubing.
To put together the knobs, you push the m6 bolts into the knurled part and then force the cap in to close to top off.
The tolerances are very tight, so you can use the nut from the other side to pull the bolt into place. If the opposite is true and the parts are loose, just use some glue.
For inserting a nut into the main plastic part, you need a long m6 bolt. You put the nut on top of its intended spot and use the long bolt to screw into it and then pull it into the place. The tolerances are so that the nut should stay in place once it's been pushed into the hole.
After all this, you just screw the tubing and knurled knobs into the main plastic parts and you can put the tool together by sliding on the measuring stick onto the main tube. Oh, and you should glue a scale onto the man tube. If you don't have an industrial meter, you can use the one used in clothing industry
3D printing settings
There are some custom brims on the main parts, for best results use supports only on the 90°overhang. If the custom brims don't adhere to your part and it lifts up, use normal ones in your slicer.
For the knurled knobs, print the main part with the small hole up using supports and the cap with the bigger side facing down. It isn't very noticeable, but it has a taper so don't forget about it!
